Design for an Unknown Future: Amplified Roles for Collaboration,New Design Knowledge and Creativity
What does it mean to design for an unknown future? Specifically, what is the role of design in an increasingly uncertain future, and what are some of the ways in which design practitioners are using design thinking and practice to address some of the more complex environmental, social, economic and cultural challenges of our time? This paper reviews the literature on the changing landscape of design practice and discusses key drivers behind this change. The paper identifies and discusses three emerging roles for the designers that are considered increasingly important for the future of design: co-creator in collaborative and interdisciplinary teams; generator of new design knowledge; and contributor to creative cultures.
